HEC survey in Phu Luang National Park, Loei Province, June 11-15, 2007
During June 11- 15, HEC staff conducted a HEC survey in Phu Luang National Park, Loei province. The staffs visited 8 villages in 4 different districts - Pha Hin Ngam, Pha Wai, and Pha Fai villages in Nong Hin district ; Pak Dang village in Darnsai district ; Namkor village in Wang Sapong district ; and None Watthana, Loei Taotad, and Khok Nong Haew villages in Phu Luang district. The main income generation in the areas is farming. The primary crops are rice, sugar cane, corn, and tapioca. HEC has occured in the areas for years. For example, in the Nong Hin district area, it has occured here for 15 years. The elephant is a single large bull about 50 year olds with approximately one-meter tusks. In the Phu Luang district area, it has occured for 10 years. The elephant is a family with about 4-5 members. Since it has happened, three people have been injured. The last person was injured in 2005. In Pak Dang village in Darnsai district, the elephant is a single short-tusk bull. It is expected that the conflicts will occur again in the next three months in harvesting season.
