A small attempt to help the ‘streets elephants’ and their mahouts to have better life conditions here and now, at the same time bringing them to work together towards elephant conservation and awareness raising among stakeholders.

Thai Elephants Centre for Conservation (TECC)

Nowadays, Thai Elephants have been forgotten behind though they used to be influenced on Thais and played an important role as the Elephant warrior for Siam to be independent as today.Transition from Agriculture time to Industrial timse affects to culture, society and environment. Thai Elephant role has been reduced by the changes. At the present, Thai Elephants are working as a labor animal which sometimes it is not enough for living.

As the results, some of mahouts and elephants seek for an opportunity to be alive. They come to the City and make the fortune. They make money by walking along the street and ask for money. Car crash is an accident that is always seen and Elephant is a victim. The government and public companies have tried to find the solution, but because of the complication and difficulty constrains. This has become one of significant problems in the city that have been perceived for 10 years and waited for resolve.

Lack of knowledge and values consideration in any ways of people to solve the problem, is one of the most important factors that lead to unsuccessful problem resolution.

Accordingly, Thai Elephant Activity Center for Conservation has been established by collaboration of many parties in order to public knowledge and better understanding of the Elephant completely in everyway to people for a steady progression and secure development in the future. Furthermore, Thai Elephant will be pronounced and disclosed to the world of its value in order to be recognized and realized the essential of The Elephants as they are the Thai emblem.

Commentary

All Elephants in the Elephant Activities Center for Conservation were either domestic elephants or street elephants before they have been adopted and supervised by the center. Under the care of the Center, both mahouts and elephants have security and welfare.

Activities

  • To make public Elephant knowledge to community by camping with students within in Khao Yai area which from around 160 schools.
  • To present Elephant history and stories by lecture, demonstration and training.
  • To propose activities; such as riding elephants, giving fruits and food, in order visitors to raise donations or sponsorship for further purposes of The Elephants Center for Conservation.

 

TECC's Elephant Development

TECC's Elephant Development Project has as mission to provide a balanced diet and full animal healthcare support for resident elephants, while offering Human Resources support for Mahouts living at the site of Thai Elephant Center for Conservation.

More specifically, this project is about:

  • To provide resident elephants with animal healthcare, managed by a Specialized Veterinary Surgeon and executed by its Veterinary team.
  • To provide resident elephants with balanced and periodically revised nutrition, with help of a Specialized Veterinary Surgeon and its Veterinary team, and through Periodical Laboratory Exams monitor elephants’ health.
  • To manage the resident team of Mahouts and provide welfare and human resources support.

TECC’s Mahouts Life Enhancement

TECC's Mahouts Life Enhancement Project has as mission to improve Mahouts’ Life Quality through participation in knowledge gathering and creation activities, alternative and renewable energy research and development projects, and providing welfare support to their families.

More specifically, this project's objectives and target accomplishments are:

  • To offer Mahouts the opportunity of taking part in researches and surveys happening in TECC and under Research & Development Project.
  • To offer Mahouts means to improve their communication skills and be able to transmit their animal lore to the visiting public.
  • To offer Mahouts means to develop projects of alternative energy and use of resources.
  • To invite Mahouts to take part in the information gathering ans surveys involved with any research projects taking place in TECC.
  • To offer Mahouts basic english communication skills with help of voluntary english teachers.
  • To support Mahouts in the conceptualization, implementation and operation of alternative uses for elephants’ manure in renewable energy, namely Biogas Extraction, sustainable agriculture and other fields, aiming at the sharing of knowledge and development of simple and pratical solutions that could be replicated in other Elephants’ Centers or Mahouts’ Villages throughout Thailand.
  • To guarantee through scholarship all Mahouts’ children receive at least basic education and are encouraged to continue their studies.
